Frank Schell left Bank One, NA in 2002 (a successor to the First National Bank of Chicago) and was named President & Chief Executive Officer of Chicago Commons, a leading social services provider established in Chicago in 1894 originally to assist immigrants in their assimilation.

The agency has a rich history in Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. Its founder, Graham Taylor, was on the faculty of the Chicago Theological Seminary. Later, Taylor merged the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy with the University of Chicago to form the School of Social Services Administration at the University of Chicago.

Chicago Commons has evolved with its focus over the years to encompass early childhood education, senior care services, employment and language training, youth counseling, and child welfare. For decades, Chicago Commons has provided neighborhoods with a forum for association and a voice. It has also been a force for advocacy on public policy issues.

Frank had previously served on the board of directors and executive committee of Chicago Commons, which had a budget of over $20 million and a work force of about 500 FTE. The financial environment right after 9/11 was particularly stressful for nonprofits, presenting major challenges. Under Frank's leadership, Chicago Commons renewed its commitment to the neighborhoods of Chicago, enhanced relations with City Hall and institutional donors, and focused on mission execution, fiscal management, and governance.

He has served on other nonprofit boards such as Music of the Baroque where he was vice chairman. Other current associations include the President’s Circle of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and the Chicago Council on Science and Technology.
